Bill Maher's surprising change of heart after the Trump dinner

The host of the HBO comedy show, Bill Maher, met with Donald Trump at the White House. He did not hold back his criticism of the president in the past, but he changed his mind after the visit. "Everything I’ve not liked about him was, I swear to God, absent. At least on this night, with this guy," said Maher.

Bill Maher, the comedian and host of "Real Time with Bill Maher" on HBO, shared his impressions of the dinner with Donald Trump. The meeting, which took place in March at the White House, surprised the journalist, who admitted that the president was completely different from his public image. Maher has been among the critics of the President of the United States. The meeting was organised by Kid Rock, the music star, and was also attended by Dana White, head of the UFC organisation.

The New York Post reports that Maher noted that Trump was open to conversation and did not shy away from complex topics. He spoke about his observations on his show.

Everything I’ve not liked about him was, I swear to God, absent. At least on this night, with this guy. I never felt I had to walk on eggshells around him. And honestly, I voted for Clinton and Obama, but I would never feel comfortable talking to them the way I was able to talk with Donald Trump, quotes the comedian. Make of it what you will, "New York Post".

During the dinner, Maher presented Trump with a list of insults the president had directed at him. To the comedian's surprise, Trump reacted with humour and signed the list. Maher also received several hats with "MAGA" written on them. The comedian emphasised that the conversation was relaxed and full of mutual respect despite political differences. He was surprised that Trump used the word "loss" in the context of the 2020 elections.

Maher pointed out character traits of Trump that are not visible publicly. According to Maher, the president can laugh, even at himself, which was a big surprise for the comedian. The comedian claims that he has spoken many times with "prominent people" who do not make eye contact or listen to what is being said. He did not notice this in the current president of the USA.

Just for starters, he laughs. I’d never seen him laugh in public. But he does — including at himself — and it’s not fake. Believe me, as a comedian of forty years, I know a fake laugh when I hear it, summarised Maher.
