Britain eyes promising trade talks with US amid EU tensions

The British have "a good chance" of striking a deal with the United States, revealed J.D. Vance, as quoted by CNBC. The U.S. Vice President explained that talks are ongoing about a new trade agreement with Keir Starmer's government. Moreover, Donald Trump was fond of Queen Elizabeth II and now holds great affection for the United Kingdom.

– We're certainly working very hard with Keir Starmer's government – said Vance in an interview with UnHerd. According to Vance, as quoted by CNBC, Trump has a deep appreciation for the United Kingdom, marked by admiration for Queen Elizabeth II and respect for King Charles. Beyond his notable business ties in the UK, the connection is rooted in a deeper cultural bond, as the U.S. is fundamentally shaped by Anglo-Saxon heritage.

The politician added that an agreement between the countries should be reached soon, which is in the interest of both nations.

Trump's "affection" reportedly manifests itself in the form of relatively low tariffs (10%) imposed on the UK by the White House. CNBC emphasizes that the trade exchange between the countries is balanced. The situation is different with services – here, the surplus is on the British side.

The details of what the agreement will include and its duration remain unknown. London is optimistic about the cooperation, which cannot be said for EU countries, on whom mutual tariffs of 20% have been imposed. In response, the European Union retaliated with 25% tariffs, which were suspended when Trump first suspended his tariffs.

The White House "appreciates" the EU too. But less

When asked about cooperation with the EU, Vance replied that the White House could sign new agreements, but they must be "fair." Previously, Donald Trump accused the EU of exploiting the United States.

The U.S. Vice President noted that relations with the UK are far more mutual compared to those with Germany. While acknowledging the value of the partnership with Germany, he pointed out that the country depends significantly on exports to the U.S. yet imposes strict regulations on many American firms trying to enter the German market.

However, this did not prevent Vance from stating that he "appreciates Europe."

– I love European people. I've said repeatedly that I think that you can't separate American culture from European culture – assessed Vance. However, it is not unconditional admiration, as he believes the EU should increase spending on defence.

He concluded the conversation by saying that Europe should not be a subordinate of the USA in terms of security, as it benefits no one.
