Cannes applauds as Tom Cruise impresses with final mission
The gala premiere of "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning" at the Cannes Festival ended with spectacular success. Tom Cruise's stunt displays were rewarded by the audience with a five-minute (some sources say even seven-minute) standing ovation, and most importantly, the film is receiving very positive reviews.
In recent years, the Cannes Festival has become a place where the biggest Hollywood stars present their cinematic works summarising their entire professional life's achievements. In 2023, Harrison Ford came to Cannes with the farewell instalment of "Indiana Jones," and a year later, Kevin Costner presented audiences with "Horizon: Chapter 1."
Hollywood cinema legends were welcomed in Europe with great pomp, and the screenings of their films ended with lengthy standing ovations. Ford and Costner couldn’t hold back tears of emotion; however, they ultimately left Cannes with beautiful memories and a suitcase of bad reviews of their films, which eventually led to their box office failure.
Everything indicates that the case of Tom Cruise and his "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning" will be different. The film will leave Cannes with good reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, nearly a hundred reviews of the film have appeared, 87% of which are decidedly positive.
Viewers and critics are primarily impressed by the film’s dizzying pace, spectacular action scenes, and Tom Cruise’s stunt performances. The main criticism, which is quite frequently repeated in reviews, concerns the length of the film's story. "The Final Reckoning" is 2 hours and 49 minutes long. But Cruise can be understood. It’s his farewell to a character that has accompanied him in his professional career for nearly 30 years, and it was difficult for him to discard some, perhaps unnecessary, scenes.
"To be here in Cannes and have these moments, as a kid when we were growing up, I really can't even dream about something like this happening. I'm very grateful for 30 years to be able to entertain you with this franchise," said Tom Cruise from the stage after the film's gala premiere.
