  • Pope Francis passed away on 21 April 2025 at the age of 88, marking the beginning of the sede vacante period in the Catholic Church.
  • Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the current Secretary of State of the Holy See, is often mentioned as a potential candidate for the papacy.
  • Recently, it was reported by Vatican journalists that his health has suddenly deteriorated.

"According to multiple sources, yesterday afternoon an "alert" was triggered in the Vatican concerning the health of former Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who is considered one of the leading papal contenders," wrote renowned Vatican journalist Diane Montagna on the platform X.

"The 70-year-old Cardinal reportedly suffered a sudden illness due to elevated blood pressure & was attended to by a medical team that assisted him for an hour," Diane Montagna added on platform X.

The conclave, during which the cardinal-electors will choose Francis's successor, will begin on 7 May.

Chances for the Papacy

Following the death of Pope Francis on 21 April 2025, the Catholic Church has entered the sede vacante period, with Parolin's name featuring prominently among the favourites to assume the See of Peter. His diplomatic experience, moderate views, and alignment with Francis's approach make him appealing to cardinals who might prefer continuity. Parolin's Italian heritage remains an advantage, given the historical preference for Italian popes.

On social media platforms like X, Parolin is portrayed as "Francis's right hand" and as a "moderate candidate," reflecting widespread perceptions. Users note his pro-Palestinian and pro-Ukrainian stance, as well as his vision of Christianity as a unifying force for Europe.

However, some highlight his cautious stance on gender ideology, which may be contentious in more liberal circles.

Parolin is seen as a candidate who could "provide a few years of respite" following the dynamic papacy of Francis, as indicated by the website pch24.pl. His mediation skills and experience in managing the Roman Curia are significant assets in his candidacy. Nevertheless, competition at the conclave, which is expected to take place between 6 and 11 May 2025, is expected to be intense, with other candidates, such as Cardinals Tagle and Erdő, also being considered.
