Citric acid: The natural powerhouse transforming home cleaning

Almost everyone has a box of bicarbonate of soda in the kitchen cupboards, which is indispensable for cleaning. However, it now has a worthy rival—citric acid. This readily available chemical compound is extremely effective in both the kitchen and bathroom.

Citric acid is an organic chemical compound. Despite the passing years, we still commonly use it in our homes. It's traditionally used as an antioxidant in food, an ingredient in medications, and a cleaning agent. Let's focus on this latter function because this unassuming powder can revolutionise our daily chores.

Citric acid, easily found in any shop, works excellently as a descaler. We use it, for example, in kettles. To remove limescale from a kettle, pour a packet of citric acid inside, fill it with water, and bring it to a boil.

Importantly, citric acid is harmless and edible, so it poses no health risk. After the process, just pour the water and rinse the limescale. The effect should last for a long time.

This acid can also be used to descale and unclog drains and pipes. Just pour a generous tablespoon of citric acid into the drain (kitchen or bathroom) and pour warm or hot water over it; this process can be repeated. This way, we naturally get rid of lingering residues and unpleasant odours. It's a very good alternative to many popular chemical agents.

This citric acid treatment is worth doing regularly—once or twice a week — in older buildings or with frequent drain clogs. This solution will prevent more complex problems with your drains.

Citric acid can also be used to remove limescale from the toilet. Mix it with bicarbonate of soda and pour it into the toilet bowl. Then add hot water and leave it for half an hour.

Another use is to create a citric acid paste. Making it is very simple. Add just a bit of water to the citric acid for consistency. Then apply it to areas covered with limescale. After half an hour, rinse it off, and enjoy the cleanliness of your fixtures.
