Closure of legendary mirage sparks major Las Vegas transformation

The landmark of Las Vegas will cease to exist, and 3,000 people will lose their jobs. In its place, a new resort will be built in place of the luxurious Mirage Hotel and Casino. The tropical theme will be replaced by a tower over 213 metres high, shaped like a guitar. The opening is planned for 2027.

On 17 July, after 34 years of existence, the legendary Mirage—a luxury hotel and casino in Las Vegas—ended its operations. The resort's owner is Hard Rock International, which bought it in 2022 for about €949 million.

On the day of the hotel's closure, CNN reported that a farewell party was planned. The party would last a week and end with a prize draw. Guests could win a total of €1.42 million.

Next, the Mirage building will be demolished, and in its place, a new recreational and gambling facility in the shape of a guitar, symbolising Hard Rock International, will be built.

The new 213-metre-tall facility is scheduled to be completed in 2027. According to announcements, the building will resemble the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida. It will be a place of employment for about 6,000 people.

Due to the closure of the Mirage, 3,000 employees will be laid off. Hard Rock International announced it would pay these individuals about €73 million in severance. The Mirage was opened in 1989 by casino magnate Steve Wynn.
