Co‑sleeping with dogs: Safety concerns for certain breeds

Many people believe allowing a dog to sleep with its owner in bed is common practice. However, it's essential to consider the potential consequences of such a decision. For safety reasons, some dog breeds should avoid sleeping in the same bed as humans.

Dog owners can be divided into two groups. Some allow their beloved pets to sleep with them without hesitation, while others oppose the practice. The most important factor is making a conscious decision, considering several essential criteria. For some dog breeds, it's better to have their bed.

These dog breeds should not sleep with their owner

According to "Animal World," Dr. Katy Alexander from the British Blue Cross suggests that certain dogs should not share a bed with their owner for safety reasons. The veterinarian specifically advises against co-sleeping with small dogs, puppies, and animals that have difficulty moving.

As Dr. Katy Alexander explains, during co-sleeping, there is a risk of suffocation or the inability for the animal to leave the bed if it becomes too hot. To minimise the risk of overheating, it's advisable to teach the dog to avoid going under the duvet.

It's worth keeping in mind

If you decide to share your bed with your dog, ensuring it’s completely safe and comfortable for both parties requires adhering to a few rules.

Hygiene, including cleaning paws before going to bed, is fundamental. If the animal has long fur, brushing it before sleep is advisable. The dog should also have a safe place to sleep – unless it finds a spot in the corner of the bed from which it can easily get down. Alternatively, placing the dog's bed in a corner of the bedroom will allow the pet to see its owners while sleeping in its own place.
