UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson killed in NYC shooting
Brian Thompson, the 50-year-old CEO of the medical giant UnitedHealthcare, has passed away. He was shot on Wednesday in front of the New York Hilton Midtown in Manhattan, where the company was holding an investor day, reports CBS.

According to American media, the assailant shot at Thompson from a distance of a few metres. The killer was reportedly waiting for him outside the hotel and shot him in the back and leg. The victim died at the hospital. The perpetrator fled the scene and was last seen in Central Park.
"Investigators are still searching for the shooter (...). A surveillance photo released by the police shows a person dressed in black wearing a hood and carrying a backpack. None of the photos show the shooter's face," we read in "The New York Times."
Who is Brian Thompson?
Brian Thompson became the CEO of UnitedHealthcare in 2021. The company, which deals with, among other things, health insurance, is part of UnitedHealth Group, whose revenues in the third quarter of the year were expected to exceed £82 billion (an increase of £7 billion year-over-year).
CBS emphasises that Thompson joined UnitedHealth Group in 2004. Previously, he was involved in government insurance programmes such as Medicare and Medicaid. Before becoming CEO of UnitedHealthcare, he was a financial controller and director in the corporate development department. Over 20 years ago, he was an accountant at the global firm PwC. In 1997, he graduated from the University of Iowa.
