According to American media, the assailant shot at Thompson from a distance of a few metres. The killer was reportedly waiting for him outside the hotel and shot him in the back and leg. The victim died at the hospital. The perpetrator fled the scene and was last seen in Central Park.

"Investigators are still searching for the shooter (...). A surveillance photo released by the police shows a person dressed in black wearing a hood and carrying a backpack. None of the photos show the shooter's face," we read in "The New York Times."
