Crisis intensifies: Trump's adviser faces calls to resign
A crisis is escalating in the US concerning Mike Waltz, Trump's national security adviser. It was disclosed that top administration officials inadvertently included a journalist in a group chat where confidential war plans were being discussed. A heated debate has commenced in the White House about whether Waltz should be compelled to resign.
You can’t have recklessness as the national security adviser, a White House official stated.
Compromise in the Trump administration
No decision has been made at this moment. However, officials highlight that the final decision on this issue will rest with President Trump, who is anticipated to decide in the coming days while monitoring media reports on the scandal.
According to Politico, a senior administration official disclosed that negotiations are ongoing through various communication channels involving White House staff regarding Waltz's future. This is in connection with the report that the adviser inadvertently added the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, Jeffrey Goldberg, to a chat discussing a potential military action against the Houthis.
— Half of them saying he’s never going to survive or shouldn’t survive, — an official said anonymously. Two senior White House advisers have even proposed that Waltz should resign to spare the president from a difficult situation.
— It was reckless not to check who was on the thread. It was reckless to be having that conversation on Signal. You can’t have recklessness as the national security adviser, — the official stressed.
Media reports indicate that on 11 March, Goldberg received an invitation to the Signal app from "Mike Waltz". He was then added to the group chat "Houthi PC small group," which allegedly included top administration officials, among them Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Vice President J.D. Vance, and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard.
Will Trump's adviser be held accountable for his mistake?
According to a third source, Trump has already discussed this matter with Waltz.
— As President Trump said, the attacks on the Houthis have been highly successful and effective. President Trump continues to have the utmost confidence in his national security team, including national security adviser Mike Waltz, — declared White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt. The press office declined further comment.
Another White House official admitted that there's increasing pressure within the administration for Waltz to take responsibility for his mistake, which might result in his resignation. As he noted, ultimately, everything depends on the president’s personal judgment, especially since other officials were also involved in the chat.
Some sources believe Trump may hold Waltz accountable for a potential threat to US security, though he might equally be exasperated with Vance for making statements contradictory to the administration's foreign policy. Others point to Hegseth as the individual who could have shared confidential information in the group.
