Crucial role of cruciferous vegetables in controlling blood sugar

The journal "Nature Microbiology" published the results of a study involving 74 individuals with elevated blood sugar levels. Over a period of 12 weeks, participants consumed sulforaphane, a chemical compound found naturally in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, turnips, Swiss chard, horseradish, radishes, and watercress. Some participants received a placebo, allowing for a comparison of the effects of sulforaphane.
These vegetables affect blood sugar
Scientists observed that among those who were given sulforaphane, the drop in blood sugar levels was significant. This discovery opens the door to new treatment possibilities for pre-diabetic conditions using this compound extracted from cruciferous vegetables; broccoli and their sprouts contain particularly high amounts of it. Sulforaphane is already known for its strong antioxidant properties. It also has anti-cancer effects, helps lower LDL cholesterol, often referred to as bad cholesterol, and increases HDL, or good cholesterol. Furthermore, it protects cell DNA from damage and supports the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
