Danish water infrastructure faces 'very high' cyber threat
The Danish Cybersecurity Centre warns of a very high risk of cyber-attacks on the water sector. The threat increased following the December incident involving pro-Russian hackers.
The Danish Cybersecurity Centre issued a warning on Wednesday about possible cyber-attacks on water infrastructure. The risk has been assessed as "very high".
This decision stems from the December breach by a pro-Russian hacker group into the IT system of a water and sewage company in one of the Danish municipalities. As a result of this incident, a pipe burst, and there were disruptions in the water supply for residents.
Increase in cyberattack threats
Mark Fiedel, head of the Cybersecurity Centre, emphasised the importance of protecting this sector.
"The water sector is a fundamental part of what forms the critical infrastructure in Denmark," he stated.
According to the government agency, the threat of hacking attacks is particularly high from criminal groups that may attempt to extort ransom. The communication emphasised that many of these groups are supported by foreign states, including Russia.
Regarding the threat related to cyber espionage, it was assessed as "medium".
The Danish government plans to boost funding for the Emergency Management Agency for 2025-2026. A new cyber and information security strategy for the country is to be developed this year. These measures are aimed at increasing protection against cyber threats, which may have serious consequences for critical infrastructure.
