Disney faces backlash over Rachel Zegler's online comments
Rachel Zegler, the star of Disney's new "Snow White," has caused tensions in the studio with her controversial social media posts. Disney has taken extraordinary steps to address the situation and protect its multi-million pound project.
We have repeatedly written about the controversies surrounding the premiere of "Snow White," which was finally well-received by critics. However, good reviews did not encourage viewers to flock to cinemas, and "Snow White" had a very weak opening. Meanwhile, new reports are emerging about the behind-the-scenes marketing preparations for the film. Rachel Zegler caused quite a stir at Disney with her comments about Donald Trump.
Controversies surrounding Rachel Zegler and Disney's film
For months, concerns had been growing at Disney related to Rachel Zegler's online activity. According to the "New York Post," the actress repeatedly posted controversial comments, including ones criticising President Donald Trump. In one of the posts, she expressed a wish that Trump supporters, voters, and Trump himself would never experience peace. In another, she used explicit language to strongly criticise Donald Trump, including a direct profanity aimed at him.
As reported by "Variety," Disney had had enough. The film's star was deterring and could possibly offend half of the potential audience for "Snow White," which had already cost much more in production than expected. The film's budget ballooned with a fire on set, costly reshoots, and COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.
In November 2024, three months after the 23-year-old actress was criticised for the comment "and always remember, free palestine" under her family film trailer, Disney decided to hire a social media specialist. Their task was to monitor and verify Zegler’s posts before the film's premiere, scheduled for 21 March.
The studio feared that the actress's controversial statements might deter viewers, especially since nearly half of Americans voted for Trump. Producer Marc Platt, known for "Wicked," personally flew from Los Angeles to New York to persuade Zegler to remove the problematic posts. However, the actress refused.
A source told "Variety" that she did not understand the consequences of her actions in the context of the film, Gal Gadot, and other people.
The situation also affected Gal Gadot, who played the role of the Evil Queen. The actress began receiving threats, forcing Disney to provide her with additional security.
The premiere of "Snow White" turned out to be a disappointment. Despite debuting at number one in the domestic box office, the film only earned around €81 million worldwide, a small amount compared to its budget of approximately €250 million.
