The eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has been struck by a catastrophic flood, leading to the loss of over 100 lives. Torrential rains that hit the area on Friday caused the Kasaba River to overflow, and the waters of Lake Tanganyika to inundate the surrounding villages.

Tragic effects of the flood

Samy Kalodji, a representative of the local authorities in the Fizi district in South Kivu province, reported that the death toll has risen to over one hundred.

Earlier reports indicated 62 fatalities. The flood has destroyed numerous homes, churches, and schools, which were serving as shelters for refugees from the north.

This area is facing not only a natural disaster but also violence resulting from armed conflicts. The M23 group, with support from Rwanda, controls large parts of the North Kivu and South Kivu provinces.

Towns near Lake Tanganyika have received tens of thousands of refugees, who now must confront the flood's aftermath.

Local authorities stress that the lack of mobile communication in some flood-affected areas may delay the delivery of humanitarian aid, presenting an additional challenge in an already difficult scenario.
