Egg thieves strike amid soaring prices in Pennsylvania

In Pennsylvania, thieves stole 100,000 eggs from a distribution trailer belonging to Pete & Gerry's Organics. The value of the goods was estimated at approximately $40,000 (€39,000). Authorities believe this may be related to the rising egg prices in the US, which are reaching near-record levels.

CNN reports that the egg incident occurred in Greencastle on Saturday evening. According to the Pennsylvania State Police report, eggs with an estimated value of $40,000 (€39,000) were stolen.

"Pete & Gerry’s is aware of a recent incident in Franklin County, Pennsylvania and we are actively working with local law enforcement to investigate. We take this matter seriously and are committed to resolving it as quickly as possible," the company stated in a statement to CNN.

High egg prices in the US. Shelves are bare

Authorities do not rule out that the theft may be related to the egg crisis that erupted in the US.

The egg industry has faced significant challenges in recent months due to the avian flu epidemic. According to the USDA, almost half of all birds killed by the virus in 2024 are laying hens (in November and December).

The national average egg price was a hot topic in the period leading up to the US presidential election in November 2024. Consumers and restaurants continue to face higher prices resulting from reduced supply.

According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in December 2024, the average price of a dozen large Grade A eggs was $4.15. In comparison, a carton of eggs cost $3.65 in November, and in December 2024 - $2.51.

Additionally, the consumer price index shows that in December, egg prices rose by more than 36% year over year. The Department of Agriculture forecasts a further price increase of about 20% in 2025.

The difficult situation in the egg market has forced some businesses to take action. CNN reports that Waffle House is adding a 50-cent surcharge per egg due to the nationwide increase in egg prices. They cited a continuing egg shortage as the reason. Depending on market conditions, the surcharge will be adjusted or eliminated.

The situation is so serious that in some stores, egg shelves are bare. According to CNN, shortages are visible in areas around Washington.
