Elderberry, also known by its Latin name Sambucus nigra, grows commonly across the UK and Europe. Unlike the ornamental lilac, often mistaken for this plant, the elderberry is characterised by delicate white flowers grouped in umbels and small, dark purple fruits. Although unassuming at first glance, elderberry is a true powerhouse of active ingredients supporting health.

Regularly drinking infusions, juices, or syrups made from elderberry can naturally boost immunity and benefit the circulatory system. This is thanks to the presence of valuable flavonoids, vitamin C, vitamin A, and minerals such as potassium, calcium, and iron.   1. Clean and thoroughly rinse about 2 kg of ripe fruits.
  2. Cook them in a pot with a cup of water for about 30 minutes.
  3. When the fruits are soft, strain them through a sieve and add 500 g of sugar and the juice from one lemon to the resulting juice.
  4. Boil the mixture again and pour it into sterilised jars or bottles.

This syrup can be consumed daily — preferably 1–2 tablespoons a day for adults. Children need only half of that dose. It can be added to tea or diluted with water as a healthy drink.

An alternative is the infusion of elderberry flowers. Simply pour boiling water over 1–2 tablespoons of dried flowers and steep for a few minutes. This drink not only boosts immunity but also soothes coughs, fever, and cold symptoms.
