Europe urged to bolster defences as Russian arsenal grows

The International Institute for Strategic Studies has issued a warning that Russia could build a substantial military arsenal by 2027, posing a significant threat to Europe. The report underscores the necessity for increased defence spending on the continent.

The institute's report draws attention to the potential military threat emanating from Russia. With the possibility of US forces withdrawing from Europe, the continent must prepare for a likely increase in defence expenditure.

Russia may have 3,300 tanks in 2027

According to the report, Europe might need to invest as much as one trillion euros to offset the absence of American military support. This primarily pertains to missile forces and long-range weapons, which are essential for the region's security.

Estimates suggest that by 2027, Russia could accumulate an extensive arsenal, including 3,300 tanks, 11,000 armoured vehicles, and 2,000 artillery units. Such capabilities could be directed against European nations, placing them in a challenging defensive situation.

The report emphasises that one factor allowing Russia to bolster its military potential is the swift resolution of the conflict in Ukraine. This would provide Moscow with the opportunity to rearm and stockpile equipment reserves. However, the report's authors note that a rapid settlement concerning Ukraine is improbable. Current discussions between Putin and Trump are not achieving the desired outcomes, complicating this prospect.

Given these threats, Europe should contemplate increasing orders for heavy weaponry to enhance its defence capabilities and prepare for future challenges.

The report does not specify which particular tanks Russia might accumulate. However, it is worth noting that these likely include the T-90M Proryv, one of the most technologically advanced vehicles in the Russian military. It features a modern 125 mm 2A46M-5 gun and an upgraded fire control system known as Kalina, making it a vital component of the Russian armed forces. Additional protection is afforded by the Relikt reactive armour, which defends both the turret and hull of the vehicle. The tank's armament is completed by two machine guns, with calibres of 7.62 mm and 12.7 mm.
