Europe urged to lead in Ukraine talks as US, Russia ease tensions

Vladimir Putin stated there is nothing wrong with European involvement in negotiations about Ukraine on Monday. He also added that Russia and the USA could agree to reduce defence spending, which he felt would be a good idea.

Putin added that the prepared agreement between the USA and Ukraine about minerals is not a matter for Russia.

- Europe must take that central role in ensuring long-term security of Ukraine, which they want to do - U.S. President Donald Trump said earlier after meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron in Washington, D.C.

In his remarks, Macron agreed that this is the right time and perhaps the only opportunity to end the war in Ukraine.

Trump stressed that the most important thing is to negotiate a ceasefire "as soon as possible" and ultimately achieve "lasting peace."
