During a visit by European diplomats to the refugee camp in Jenin on the West Bank, Israeli soldiers opened fire. The shots were intended to intimidate the delegation, which visited the area to observe the difficult living conditions of the residents. Fortunately, no one was injured.

Why did Israel shoot at the refugee camp?

The Israel Defense Forces explained that the warning shots were fired when the delegation strayed from the predetermined route. The military expressed regret for the "inconvenience" and announced an investigation into the matter. The soldiers are to personally contact the diplomats to explain the situation.

The incident provoked a strong international reaction. The EU's head of diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, emphasised that any threat to the lives of diplomats is unacceptable. Italy and France summoned the Israeli ambassadors, demanding explanations.

Jenin - a place of intense Israeli military activity

Jenin, located in the northern part of the West Bank, has been a place of intense Israeli military activity for months. The military operations aim to combat terrorist groups that have gained strength following the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023.

Since the beginning of operations in Jenin, the Israeli military has killed over 100 terrorists and detained over 320 wanted individuals. As a result of the military actions, approximately 40,000 Palestinians have been displaced, and hundreds of buildings have been destroyed.

The increase in terrorist activity on the West Bank, supported by Iran, has led to the deaths of over 60 Israelis. In response, the Israeli military has killed over 930 Palestinians.
