F‑16s bolster Ukrainian defences against Russian drones

The Ukrainian Air Force has released a photo of an F-16 that took part in repelling a large-scale attack by Russian drones. The effectiveness of the American fighter jet was proven to be very high.

According to Ukrainian sources, this particular F-16 returned to base after expending five AIM-9 missiles to neutralise enemy drones. It was reported that each of the missiles hit its target, which, according to the Ukrainians, underscores the excellent effectiveness of the F-16 and the significant role these aircraft play in maintaining security over the partially occupied country.

"Morning of May 6, 2025. Shahed hunters returning home… Only one missile left under this F-16’s wing — which means five AIM-9s found their targets," declared the Ukrainian Air Force's press service.

In the large-scale attack described by the Ukrainians, the Russians deployed a total of 136 assault and decoy drones targeting various regions of Ukraine.

"This operation highlights the critical role of the F-16 fighters in Ukraine's air defense strategy. Despite operating older models with limited radar capabilities and shorter-range missiles, Ukrainian pilots have demonstrated exceptional skill and adaptability," wrote analysts from Defence Express.

Important elements of the Ukrainian Air Force

The missiles from the AIM-9 Sidewinder family are widely used weapons in NATO aviation, known for their short-range air-to-air capabilities. Ukraine has also received them in the latest version AIM-9X Sidewinder.

As for the F-16 fighters themselves, Western allies are supplying Ukraine with modified versions of the F-16A/B MLU (Mid-Life Update from the 1990s). Compared to older variants, these have better radars and allow for a more diverse range of mounted weaponry. They come standard with a built-in six-barrel 20 mm M61 Vulcan cannon.

The capabilities of the F-16 are positively noted by Ukrainian pilots, who also emphasise their effectiveness in encounters with Russians. Besides combating Russian targets, American fighter jets also provide air cover for other aircraft used by Ukrainians. These primarily include MiG-29 and Su-27 fighters as well as Su-25 attack aircraft.
