A young woman approached Lindner during his speech, addressing him with the words "dear Mr. Lindner," before throwing a substance resembling foam in his face.

A spokeswoman for the local FDP and an eyewitness to the event stated that it was shaving foam, resembling a pseudo-cake.

The woman was immediately overpowered by security guards. The chairman of the Left Party in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Hennis Herbst, confirmed that the woman is a member of their group.

Earlier, at the rally venue, several members of the Left Party's youth wing protested against FDP policies.

Lindner and FDP's reaction

Despite the incident, Christian Lindner attempted to make light of it and continued his speech.

Unfortunately, it wasn't cream, just soap. At least they could have done it better; then I would have benefited as well – he said, wiping his face with a napkin.

The vice-chairman of the FDP, Wolfgang Kubicki, expressed concern over the attack, emphasising that "instead of foam, it could have been something else." The event occurred within the context of a campaign ahead of the impending snap Bundestag elections, scheduled for 23 February.

According to polls, the FDP is hovering around the electoral threshold with support at approximately five percent.
