Former child actor still reaps royalties from "Titanic" role
Reece Thompson, who had a minor role in "Titanic" as a child with just one line, continues to receive royalties for his contribution. Initially, his mother was undecided between accepting the role in the film and participating in a petrol station advert.
"Titanic", directed by James Cameron, is one of the most successful films in history. Since its debut in 1997, the film has captivated audiences worldwide. Its appeal lies in a blend of masterful storytelling, groundbreaking special effects, and a memorable cast, as evidenced by its 11 Oscar wins.
Although the principal stars of the film are Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, there have been notable - if not lucrative - benefits for Reece Thompson, who played a small part as a five-year-old. He portrayed a young Irish passenger journeying with his mother and sister. In the film, his single sentence has been sufficient to earn him royalties to this day.
What are we doing, Mummy? - and thus concludes his line.
He said one line in "Titanic". He still receives money today
In a conversation with Business Insider, Thompson shared that he receives £80 to £200 per year in royalties for this role. As is known, it was his mother who made the decision, considering also the option of appearing in a petrol station advert.
It turned out to be one of the most famous films in history, which is quite strange when I look back, when my mother used to say, 'Let's do it, even if the film is bad, we'll see it. Finally, he blew up, so she didn't make a bad decision - he recollected in the interview.
In the end, she opted for the film, which proved to be a very prudent choice. Reece admits he is delighted with the continued interest in the production and hopes it will persist.
But hopefully, they keep playing it a lot because that means more money for me - he concluded.
