Fresh laundry: Transform your wash with salt and soda mix
Nothing diminishes the joy of freshly laundered clothes like an unpleasant smell after taking them out of the washing machine. Fortunately, there are simple, homemade methods to restore your laundry's pleasant, natural scent without resorting to chemicals.
One of the most effective and straightforward solutions involves three ingredients you probably already have at home: table salt, bicarbonate of soda, and natural essential oil. Mix about 30-40 grams of bicarbonate of soda with 15-25 grams of salt, then add a few drops of your favourite essential oil, such as lavender, lemon, or eucalyptus. You can pour this mixture directly into the washing machine drum before placing the clothes in, or put it in a special mesh bag and add it to the drum as a natural freshener.
Salt aids in stain removal, bicarbonate of soda possesses antibacterial and refreshing properties, and the essential oil imparts a long-lasting, fresh aroma to the laundry. This solution is suitable for both everyday laundry and for refreshing towels, bed linens, or sports clothes.
Additional tips for fresh laundry
For better results, it's also advisable to regularly clean the washing machine – including the drum, seals, and detergent drawer. This helps minimise the risk of mould and bacteria development, which are common causes of unpleasant odours.
Additionally, remember to:
- remove clothes immediately after the cycle ends. Damp laundry left in the machine can start to smell unpleasant after just a few hours,
- avoid overloading the drum. Clothes should have room to rinse and spin properly,
- dry laundry in a well-ventilated area. If drying indoors, ensure good air circulation.
Natural solutions can be surprisingly effective while being gentle on the skin, fabrics, and the environment. The mixture of salt, bicarbonate of soda, and essential oil is a simple way to achieve laundry that not only looks clean but also smells fresh—without the need for artificial fragrances or harsh chemicals.
