G7 commits $50bn (€48bn) to Ukraine, condemns Russia-North Korea ties
In a remote meeting on Friday, the G7 leaders agreed that Ukraine will soon receive $50 (€48) billion in loans as part of the assistance mechanism decided at the summit in Apulia in June. During the meeting, chaired by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, they condemned the military cooperation between Russia and North Korea.
An official statement, issued in Rome in connection with Italy's G7 presidency, highlighted that during the meeting, the leaders discussed various specific aid initiatives for Ukraine. These include $50 (€48) billion in loans, which are to be repaid from proceeds obtained through trading on the financial market, specifically from the extraordinary profits generated by frozen Russian assets in the group countries.
Furthermore, the statement reaffirmed the commitment to continue "to support the Ukrainian people’s fight for freedom, sovereignty and independence."
The leaders of Italy, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada, the USA, Japan, and the EU condemned the increasing military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, and announced measures against those aiding Moscow's military capabilities.
Regarding the situation in Syria following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, the G7 leaders urged the commencement of a "peaceful and orderly transition through the definition of an inclusive political process."
They also stressed the importance of adhering to the ceasefire in Lebanon.
