German North Rhine-Westphalia to pay young residents for sports participation

The German federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia has decided on an unusual initiative. Starting in 2025, it will be giving residents €205 per month. However, certain conditions must be met, reports the portal karlsruhe-insider.de.
The German portal described the federal state's idea for North Rhine-Westphalia. The local government decided to pay €205 per month, totalling approximately €833, to its residents aged 16-26. However, they must meet an additional condition.
North Rhine-Westphalia to distribute money to young athletes
Residents of this federal state must actively participate in the region's sports life. What does this mean? To receive the additional funds, they should join one of the sports clubs and actively participate in training and activities. The only thing they need to do is submit the appropriate application.
The portal karlsruhe-insider.de emphasises that in this way, the federal state wants to encourage youth to engage in sports. The programme is set to launch in 2025.
North Rhine-Westphalia is the largest federal state in Germany by population. Data from 2022 shows that the federal state had 18 million residents at the time. The capital of the region is Düsseldorf, and the largest city is Cologne. The most well-known sports team is this year's Champions League finalist in football - Borussia Dortmund.
