Grandma’s timeless yeast rolls: A slice of family history

There's nothing more homely than the scent of freshly baked yeast rolls wafting through the kitchen. It's a simple way to create an atmosphere of warmth and cosiness. Grandma always said that the secret to perfect rolls lies in the patience required during dough kneading and a pinch of love added at every stage of preparation. This recipe has been passed down in our family from generation to generation.

In a world where quick snacks and ready-made products have come to dominate our kitchens, homemade yeast rolls are a return to the tradition and flavour we remember from childhood. These fragrant, fluffy baked goods bring back memories of shared moments spent in the kitchen – the warmth of the oven, the smell of butter, and the first bite of a still-warm roll. Grandma's recipe is more than just a list of ingredients – it's a piece of family history encased in delicate dough.

Yeast roll recipe

Yeast rolls are not only the taste of childhood but also a way to share moments in the kitchen and an aroma that fills the entire house. Thanks to Grandma's proven recipe, I'm sure they always turn out perfectly – fluffy, delicate, and exceptionally delicious. It's a versatile bake that goes well with both breakfast and dessert.

Ingredients:

  • 500 grams of plain flour,
  • 250 millilitres of warm milk,
  • 60 grams of sugar,
  • 30 grams of fresh yeast,
  • 1 egg,
  • 60 grams of butter,
  • a pinch of salt,
  • 1 egg yolk for brushing,
  • 1 tablespoon of milk for brushing.

Preparation:

  1. Crumble the yeast into a small bowl, add sugar and warm milk, mix, and set aside for 10 minutes until it starts to activate.
  2. Sift the flour into a large bowl, add salt and the yeast mixture.
  3. Knead the dough, adding melted butter.
  4. When the dough becomes smooth and elastic, cover it with a cloth and leave it in a warm place for an hour to double in size.
  5. After it has risen, shape small rolls, place them on a baking tray lined with baking paper, cover with a cloth, and set aside for another 20 minutes.
  6. Then, brush them with beaten egg, sprinkle with your favourite toppings, and bake in the oven preheated to 180°C for about 15–20 minutes until they turn golden.

Filling for yeast rolls

Yeast rolls offer a great opportunity to experiment with fillings that can be tailored to our preferences. You can prepare them sweet, adding jam, chocolate cream, cheese, or seasonal fruits such as apples or blueberries. The savoury versions are just as delicious – with cheese filling, spinach, mushrooms, or even pieces of smoked meat. Thanks to the variety of toppings, the rolls become a unique treat for any occasion, from family gatherings to work lunches. Just a bit of creativity is enough to create many culinary variations from one base recipe!
