On Saturday, U.S. President Donald Trump informed on the social media platform Truth Social that India and Pakistan reached an agreement for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire. As emphasised by the American leader, this decision was the result of all-night negotiations.
India and Pakistan - ceasefire
The information about the ceasefire was also confirmed by Pakistan's Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, in a post on the X platform. Additionally, the head of American diplomacy, Marco Rubio, who conducted talks with representatives from India and Pakistan, noted that U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance was also involved in the negotiations.
Background of the conflict
Armed clashes between India and Pakistan began on Wednesday when Indian forces shelled military targets in Pakistan. Officially, it was retaliation for a terrorist attack on 22nd April in Pahalgam, in the Indian part of Kashmir, in which 26 people were killed. In response, Pakistani forces conducted a series of strikes on targets in India.
Kashmir, which has been a subject of dispute between India and Pakistan since 1947, when the partition of British India occurred, remains one of the most volatile points in the region.
