India shifts strategy, leases Airbus A330 from France

India regrets its decision to purchase Russian Il-78 aircraft instead of the A330 from Airbus. According to the Ukrainian portal Defense Express, citing findings from Opex360, it is now planning to lease the A330 MRTT from France.

Over the past two decades, India has twice considered purchasing new refuelling aircraft, including the A330 from Airbus. However, they previously opted for the Russian Il-78, which they acquired in 2003. Now, due to the low reliability of these machines, India is once again contemplating the purchase of the A330.

Problems with Il-78

According to Opex360, the operational readiness of India's Il-78s is below 50%, meaning fewer than three out of the six aircraft in the Indian Air Force can be used. The minimum required level is 70%, which equates to at least four operational aircraft. The shortage of adequate refuelling aircraft presents a problem, especially in the context of tensions with China.

Given the issues with the Russian aircraft, India plans to lease one A330 MRTT from France for the years 2025-2026. French pilots and technicians will train their Indian counterparts in handling and operating these machines. This move represents a step towards improving the situation within the Indian Air Force.

Airbus offer

In 2020, Airbus proposed the sale of six used A330 MRTTs to India, which can be converted into transport or medical aircraft. Their capabilities allow for operations in mountainous regions, which is important for India. However, the current decisions of the Indian Ministry of Defence suggest a continued preference for the Russian Il-78s.

The decision to lease the A330 MRTT from France could mark the beginning of a strategic shift in India's approach to its air fleet. Collaboration with France may offer advantages in terms of modern technologies and improved operational readiness. It also indicates that India is seeking more reliable solutions in the face of escalating geopolitical challenges.

To clarify, the aforementioned Airbus A330 MRTT is an advanced aircraft that functions as both an aerial tanker and a transporter, based on the passenger model A330. Its fuel tanks have a capacity exceeding 24,200 gallons, and it can reach a maximum speed of 547 mph. The aircraft is capable of flying at an altitude of over 41,000 feet, with a range of nearly 9,321 miles, making it exceptionally effective for long-distance operations.
