Innovative heating film set to revolutionise home comfort
Approximately 66% of household energy is dedicated to heating. Finnish researchers are introducing new technology that will reduce costs and increase comfort. The first products are expected to be available on the market next year.
The heating film, popular in modern heating systems, is a revolutionary technology that transforms walls into efficient heat sources. This allows traditional radiators to be replaced by neat heating panels that evenly distribute warmth throughout the room. The film enhances interior aesthetics by eliminating visible radiators, allowing for better space utilisation and significantly reducing energy consumption. It's an excellent option for the colder months, especially where energy efficiency and thermal comfort are paramount.
Halia system as an innovative heating method
A few years ago, the Finnish army approached the National Research and Development Centre, VTT, to create "decoys" to rapidly heat large spaces and confuse the enemy. Engineers completed this task and realised that this technology could also benefit homes and offices.
The result of this work is the Halia system. It is based on a film with a heating element operating at low voltage. Its thin profile allows for installation in almost any material, from walls to furniture and fabrics. This film does not constrain interior design possibilities; on the contrary, it opens up new opportunities.
What is the Halia system and how does it work?
The Halia system reduces energy consumption and quickly heats rooms because the film covers a large wall surface area.
Jani-Mikael Kuusisto from The Warming Surfaces Company explains that reaching the desired temperature isn't instantaneous, like turning on a light, but it only takes a few seconds.
Such "on-demand heating" can also be linked to motion sensors that activate the system when someone enters the room. This way, energy is not wasted heating empty spaces while maintaining the desired temperature, which provides convenience.
When can you use the system?
The Warming Surfaces Company confirms that production is ready and that the first products are available. The startup's representatives emphasise the technology's high scalability (for the furniture and construction industry) and low production costs due to minimal material usage.
Collaboration with the furniture and building materials sector further facilitates the system's installation.
