It Ends With Us set to dethrone Deadpool at the US box office

There's a good chance that "Deadpool & Wolverine" won't hold its top spot at the American box office this weekend. It could be overtaken by the melodrama "It Ends With Us," which is an adaptation of the most popular printed book in the US in 2022 and was made at one-eighth of the cost.

The novel "It Ends With Us" was published in 2016 but has only gained immense popularity over the past two years. Almost three million copies were sold last year, thanks to the hashtag #BookTok, which has over two billion views on TikTok. Users of the platform post videos in which they present and recommend their favourite readings.

One of the most frequently discussed authors on #BookTok is Colleen Hoover, who has thus become the most popular writer in the US today. As many as five out of the ten most purchased books were written by the author of "It Ends With Us". The influence of TikTok is so strong that it will likely drive the success of the film adaptation of the novel as well.

During Thursday's preview screenings, "It Ends With Us" (budget of €23 million) earned £6 million in American cinemas. On social media, many people declared they wanted to watch the adaptation of Colleen Hoover's book on its first release day. Viewers will flock to the cinemas. Pre-sale results indicate that the melodrama will surpass the third part of "Deadpool" (budget of €186 million) on Friday. We'll see if it has enough momentum to last through the weekend.

Like most #BookTok hits, "It Ends With Us" is a melodrama. It tells the story of Lily Bloom (Blake Lively), a woman who breaks away from a traumatic childhood and starts a new life in Boston. There, she realizes her lifelong dream. She opens a flower shop for people who don't like flowers and runs it with passion and success. When she meets the handsome doctor Ryle (Justin Baldoni), Lily feels fulfilled and happy. Until...

What lies behind the seemingly perfect relationship between Lily and Ryle can only be seen by Atlas Corrigan (Brandon Sklenar), Lily's first love and old friend. Once, she was a safe haven for him; now, she will need help from him—a true melodrama.
