Dalai Lama's successor to be born outside China in freedom
The 14th Dalai Lama has announced that his successor will be born outside of China, in the free world. This is a new declaration from the spiritual leader of Tibetans, who previously suggested that his reincarnation could occur outside of Tibet, possibly in India.
In his latest book, the 14th Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibetans, announced that his successor would be born outside of China in the free world. This represents a significant change from his earlier statements, where he only suggested the possibility of reincarnation outside of Tibet, most likely in India.
Since the purpose of a reincarnation is to carry on the work of the predecessor, the new Dalai Lama will be born in the free world so that the traditional mission of the Dalai Lama - that is, to be the voice for universal compassion, the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, and the symbol of Tibet embodying the aspirations of the Tibetan people - will continue — can be continued, stated the spiritual leader.
Although the 14th Dalai Lama previously mentioned the possibility of ending the line of spiritual leaders with himself, in his book "Voice for the Voiceless," he emphasised that Tibetans worldwide desire to continue the Dalai Lama institution. Tibetan tradition holds that an elder Buddhist monk's soul reincarnates into a child's body after death.
Conflict with China
The 14th Dalai Lama, who fled to India after an unsuccessful uprising against Chinese rule in 1959, stressed that a successor appointed by China will not be respected. Beijing aims to nominate the next leader, but the 14th Dalai Lama firmly rejects this possibility. A spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the Dalai Lama as a "political exile" engaging in anti-Chinese activities.
In his book, the 14th Dalai Lama reaffirms the ongoing effort to secure freedom for the Tibetan people. He asserts that Tibetans must ultimately have control over their homeland and that their desire for freedom cannot be permanently stifled through oppression. Additionally, he highlights that history demonstrates how persistent dissatisfaction among people inevitably disrupts societal stability.
