The newspaper "Il Messaggero" reported that the caregiver of an elderly woman from Montebelluna in the Veneto region encountered an old, worn-out mattress while cleaning her house's garage. The caregiver took the mattress to a nearby landfill without informing her employer, who was not involved in the cleaning.
The decision, which seemed sensible, had unforeseen consequences. It emerged that the elderly lady stored her life savings, credit cards, and family jewels in the mattress—all with a total value of approximately €50,000. The mattress's disappearance caused the elderly woman to panic, prompting her to immediately inform her daughter that the money and jewellery were lost.
Reaction of the Carabinieri
The elderly woman's daughter immediately reported the matter to the Carabinieri. Within minutes of the notification, the Carabinieri, Civil Protection volunteers, and landfill workers began searching for the mattress. Eventually, it was found in a large waste container with its untouched, valuable contents, which were returned to the owner.
