The Protothema portal reported on Thursday that a businessman was fined almost a million euros for conducting short-term rentals of nearly 200 villas on the Greek island of Mykonos without proper registration.

The "property manager" rented out 199 luxury villas on Mykonos for short-term periods without registering them in the designated registry. Authorities who investigated the matter in 2023 imposed a fine of €995,000 – €5,000 per undeclared property.

Renting without proper registration

During the inspection, it was found that the businessman was renting out homes in September 2022. He posted the villa rental offer online without including the appropriate registry number. Properties could be booked and paid for via bank accounts in Belgium and the United Kingdom through the website.

The penalised individual appealed the decision, emphasising that he is not the owner of the properties and merely acts as an intermediary. According to him, the owners of the properties are responsible. However, after analysing the money transfers, authorities did not accept this version, classifying him as a sub-letter.
