Main information

  • Three underground stations in Lisbon open around the clock due to heat.
  • The temperature in the Lisbon metropolitan area exceeded 33 degrees Celsius.
  • Possible opening of additional stations if the heatwave persists.

In response to the heatwave affecting Lisbon, city authorities have decided to keep three underground stations open 24 hours a day. This measure is intended to provide shelter from the extreme temperatures, which can reach up to 40 degrees Celsius.

The decision to open underground stations is primarily aimed at homeless people and those without air conditioning at home. On Wednesday, the temperature in Lisbon exceeded 33 degrees Celsius, and in the central part of the country, it reached 36 degrees Celsius.

Santa Apolónia, Rossio, and Oriente stations have been opened around the clock. The first two are located in the historic city centre, while the third is near popular areas along the Tagus River. Authorities do not rule out opening additional stations if the heatwave continues.

Meteorological forecasts

According to the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), high temperatures may persist at least until Saturday. City authorities are collaborating with the Ministry of Health to monitor the situation and take appropriate actions.

If the heatwave continues, additional underground stations may be opened. Decisions will be made in consultation with local authorities and health services to ensure the safety of Lisbon residents.
