Macron demands deadline for Russia's ceasefire or face sanctions
French President Emmanuel Macron called on Monday for a final deadline to be set for Russia to cease fire in the war with Ukraine, according to the AFP agency, citing his remarks during a visit to Vietnam.
Macron stressed the importance of setting a firm deadline for President Putin, making it evident to all that he lacks genuine intent for peace. He also noted that Russia should understand the serious risk of facing tough sanctions if it fails to respond.
The French leader stressed that Donald Trump also realised that when Putin declared a desire for peace, he was not being truthful.
Macron also recalled that on 10 May, European state leaders, while in Kyiv, issued an ultimatum to Moscow: an unconditional and lasting ceasefire or new, harsh sanctions. Russia then rejected the truce conditions and proposed negotiations, which began in Turkey but did not bring about any breakthrough.
Macron also noted that he hopes Donald Trump's anger at Russia's actions will translate into concrete steps.

Massive attacks on Ukraine
He also stressed that the United States should clearly support the European sanctions initiative against Russia, as their credibility depends on it.
Trump's statement was a reaction to Russia's massive attack on Ukraine from Saturday to Sunday, using ballistic missiles and drones. As a result of the shelling, at least 12 people died and 60 were injured – among the victims were also children.
