Manchester United to replace staff bonuses with store vouchers
Throughout most of 2024, Manchester United has been presenting its employees with ideas for cost savings. Some ideas have been more effective, while others less so. The latest proposal is likely to be the removal of Christmas bonuses, with the club opting to provide employees with store vouchers instead.
Manchester United is implementing savings measures to enhance its financial situation. As one of the most renowned football clubs in the world, it aims to regain its dominance in English, and potentially European, football. However, progress so far has been gradual.
The club has introduced savings measures that have pleased fans, such as not covering the travel expenses of players' partners to the FA Cup final. However, there was less enthusiasm when the contract with the legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who served as an ambassador for Manchester United, was terminated.
The latest idea has received mixed reactions. Manchester United has decided to eliminate Christmas bonuses, which amounted to £100 (€120) per employee.
Understandably, for management, the coach, or players, such a bonus is negligible, but for lower-level employees, it provided assistance during a time of additional expenses. This new saving measure is not groundbreaking for the club, which spends over £185 (€222) million annually on player salaries.
Employees will not be left without support during the Christmas period. Each employee will receive a shopping voucher worth £40 (€48), valid at Marks & Spencer.
The end of December is not a time for rest in English football for those involved in the sport. Clubs are heavily engaged in playing matches in the Premier League, with one match scheduled for 26 December.
