Vinegar, baking soda, lemon, and toothpaste are all you need to keep your washing machine clean and fresh. However, how you apply these products is crucial. Many internet users have appreciated this trick.

A washing machine is one of those appliances that works almost daily, yet we rarely consider its technical condition or hygiene. Unfortunately, a lack of regular maintenance can lead to unpleasant odours, limescale buildup, or mould.

The good news is that we can easily take care of it using natural products commonly found in the kitchen.

A homemade method for a clean washing machine

Despite washing our clothes daily, the washing machine itself also needs cleaning. Detergent residues, limescale from hard water, and clothing deposits can accumulate inside the drum, in the detergent drawer, or on the seals. Over time, this can lead to decreased washing efficiency, the formation of unpleasant odours, and even damage to the machine.

Many promote chemical-free cleaning. One trick for a clean washing machine is to use natural products like vinegar, baking soda, lemon, and toothpaste.

To clean the washing machine:

  • Apply toothpaste to half a lemon and place it into the washing machine drum
  • Add a tablespoon of baking soda to the rubber gasket located between the washing machine and the door and pour about 1-2 tablespoons of vinegar over it
  • Apply another portion of toothpaste to the washing machine door

Next, set the washing machine to a cycle at around 90°C. This cycle will remove limescale deposits and bacteria while refreshing the washing machine's interior.

Products for special tasks

Vinegar is a well-known descaling agent, and baking soda is excellent at neutralising unpleasant odours and removing deposits. Meanwhile, lemon is a great descaler with a pleasant, fresh scent. If you're worried about lemon pieces remaining in the washing machine, put them in a laundry bag or a sock.

Toothpaste is also significant. Thanks to its abrasive and whitening properties, it effectively removes deposits and mould.
