Nissan's uncertain future: Toyota’s potential rescue plan

The future of Nissan does not appear promising. Following the breakdown of negotiations with Honda in February, the brand finds itself in a precarious position. Local media suggests that a potential rescue could come from Toyota.

On 17th May, the Japanese daily "Mainichi" reported on discussions taking place between Nissan and Toyota. According to Japanese media, Toyota's executive director reached out to Nissan representatives as early as February, immediately following the failed agreement with Honda.

"Mainichi" does not disclose its sources, and representatives from both Nissan and Toyota remain silent on the issue. However, if the reports are true, few will be surprised. Toyota has a wealth of experience in acquiring minority stakes in other Japanese brands such as Subaru, Suzuki, and Isuzu.

Nissan undoubtedly requires assistance. On 1st April, the company appointed a new head - Ivan Espinosa replaced Makoto Uchida. The new president swiftly initiated action by announcing an aggressive restructuring programme, including the layoff of nearly 22,000 employees.

He emphasised, however, that he would not rush into ill-considered partnerships. Revitalising Nissan internally is the utmost priority, he added. Regarding potential mergers, he clarified that he is interested in the right partner, not just any partner.

Espinosa mentioned that Nissan envisions many cooperative opportunities, including a renewed relationship with Honda. Other possibilities might encompass integration, capital investments, or spin-offs of business units, explained Espinosa.
