North Korea defends sending troops to aid Russia in conflict

Kim Jong Un stated that North Korea's involvement in the Ukraine conflict is justified. According to the dictator, it is the sovereign right of the Republic and the defence of a "brother nation." Pyongyang has sent over 10,000 soldiers to Russia.

Why is North Korea supporting Russia?

Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea, emphasised that his country’s involvement in the Ukraine conflict aligns with North Korea's sovereign rights.

According to the KCNA agency, Kim described it as the defence of a "brother nation". "I consider all the brave soldiers who participated in the Kursk operation to be heroes and the highest representatives of the nation’s honour," added the dictator.

What are the consequences for relations with the USA?

Kim Jong Un warned that North Korea will not hesitate to use military force if the United States continues what he described as military provocations against Russia.

North Korea officially confirmed at the end of last month that it had sent over 10,000 soldiers and weapons to Russia, stating that "countries' military ties grew dramatically under a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty signed by Kim and Russian President Vladimir Putin last year."
