Norwegian animated film "Spermageddon" set to become cult classic

Norwegian film producers have embarked on an ambitious project. They have decided to create an animated film for adults that tells the story of Simen, a sperm cell eager to fulfil its life goal of fertilising an egg. Critics who viewed the animation before its official release describe it as a potential cult classic.

In the competitive world of filmmaking, creators are constantly devising unique concepts to captivate audiences. Special effects, extravagant costumes, chases, explosions, and unexpected plot twists are commonplace in Hollywood. Norwegian producers Tommy Wirkola and Rasmus Sivertsen from SF Studios Norge chose a different path by creating something entirely unexpected. Thus, the full-length adult animated film "Spermageddon" was conceived.

"Spermageddon" tells the story of a young couple who fall in love and experience their first time together. However, the film's central character is Simen, a sperm whose life goal is to fertilise an egg. Simen is uncertain of his success as he is not the strongest sperm cell. Whether he achieves his ultimate dream remains a mystery, as filmmakers Tommy Wirkola and Rasmus Sivertsen leave this unresolved.

The full-length animated film "Spermageddon" is exclusively for adults and is scheduled to hit cinemas in 2025. However, it had a preview at the Annecy Animation Festival.

Film critics from "The Hollywood Reporter" commented post-screening: "'Spermageddon' is a peculiar film – one whose open approach to teenage sex and the advantages of birth control might not be acceptable in the United States, but seems appropriate for Scandinavia. Despite some reservations, they declared "Spermageddon" as a film destined for cult status.

Tristan Du Laz, the CEO of Originals Factory, the company distributing the film, told Variety: "Spermageddon marks our first step into feature animation. We’re thrilled and terribly excited to be working on such an original, daring, and irreverent cinematic proposition, one that’s furiously in tune with the times. This film is a total favorite, and we can’t wait to share it with the young-adult audience for whom it is intended."

Yohann Comte, chairman of Charades, added, "I couldn’t think of a better distributor for the film. Originals Factory has proved they were one of the only distributors who could be audacious and innovative enough to bring to the theaters the young adult audience with bold indie cinema proposals, while maximizing ancillary revenues".
