Nurturing roses: Spring tips for thriving blooms
Roses are among the most beautiful flowers that can adorn our gardens. To enjoy them in their full glory, it's beneficial to ensure proper fertilisation in the spring. Learn how to prepare your roses for the upcoming season.
Spring is the perfect time to tend to our gardens, and roses are among those plants that require special attention. To enjoy their beauty, it's worth investing time in proper fertilisation. This will ensure the roses are healthy and full of flowers throughout the entire season.
How to plant roses?
Roses love the sun, so it's important to plant them in well-lit areas and places sheltered from strong winds. This way, the shrubs can develop in optimal conditions, and their flowers will be full of life and colour.
The soil in which roses grow should be fertile and well-drained. Ideally, it should have a neutral or slightly acidic pH. Before planting roses, it's worth preparing the soil by adding compost or manure to enrich it with essential nutrients. This will provide the plants with a solid foundation for growth and blooming.
How to fertilise roses?
Choosing the right fertiliser is the key to successful rose cultivation. Various types of fertilisers are available on the market, which can be divided into organic and mineral fertilisers. Organic fertilisers, such as compost or manure, are a natural source of nutrients. Their advantage is that they improve soil structure and are environmentally friendly.
Mineral fertilisers, on the other hand, provide plants with precisely selected nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. They are particularly recommended for those who want to quickly see the results of their work. However, it is important to use them according to the manufacturer's recommendations to avoid damaging the plants.
In addition to traditional fertilisers, natural methods of supporting rose growth can also be used. One popular method is to use coffee grounds, which can be spread around the shrubs and gently mixed with the soil. Coffee grounds not only enrich the soil with nitrogen but also help maintain the appropriate moisture level.
Another homemade method is using yeast. Simply dissolve a block of yeast in 14 litres of lukewarm water and water the roses with this solution. Yeast provides the plants with essential microelements, which support their growth and resistance to diseases.
You can also prepare a homemade fertiliser from bananas. Banana peels are an excellent way to naturally fertilise roses. They contain potassium, phosphorus, and calcium, which are essential for the healthy growth of plants. To prepare the fertiliser, simply cut the peels into smaller pieces and bury them around the rose shrubs. You can also make a liquid fertiliser by soaking the peels in water for a few days and then watering the plants with this solution. This way, roses will gain additional nutrients, contributing to their lush blooming.
When fertilising, it's important to avoid contact of the fertiliser with the leaves and stems, as this can cause damage. It's also essential to remember to regularly water the plants, which will help evenly distribute the nutrients in the soil. This way, roses will be able to fully utilise the potential of the fertiliser and delight us with their beauty throughout the season.
