Overnight reports: storm lashes the Balearic Islands, turmoil in Crimea, and Taiwan shakes

• A storm reached the Spanish Balearic Islands, bringing thunderstorms and strong winds. On Thursday, several flights were cancelled in Mallorca, many roads were flooded, and houses were waterlogged. Some towns also needed to be evacuated.

• Information about explosions in the vicinity of the Crimean bridge emerged in the morning. According to reports from Kyiv Independent, Ukrainian air forces fired missiles at the bridge, which was closed to traffic. There are also reports of a fire in the Kerch area. The Ukrainian side has not yet confirmed these reports.

• Dozens of Jewish settlers attacked the Palestinian village of Jit on the Israeli-occupied West Bank on Thursday evening. The attackers, who set houses and cars on fire, killed at least one person and severely injured another, local authorities reported. At least one person died from gunshot wounds inflicted by the Jewish settlers, another was critically injured, and stones thrown by the attackers lightly wounded three more Palestinians, the Palestinian health ministry informed.

• Investigators are examining the circumstances of the most significant fire in Greece this year, which covered an area comparable to the size of Paris. According to preliminary findings, the cause might have been a faulty power line, Reuters reported on Thursday. The fire broke out on Sunday afternoon in the vicinity of the town of Varnavas, about 35 kilometres north of Athens, and quickly moved towards the city. The blaze covered a total of 100 square kilometres of territory. Nearly 80 houses destroyed by the fire are no longer habitable.

• The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre recorded a 6.3 magnitude earthquake on Friday in the eastern regions of Taiwan. According to global media, the epicentre was located about 34 kilometres southeast of the city of Hualien, which has a population of 350,000 and at a depth of over 10 kilometres. The tremors were also felt in the nation's capital, Taipei. There are no reports yet of possible casualties or damage. Authorities have not issued a tsunami warning.

• Overnight, worrying news came from Croatia about the water temperature in the Adriatic Sea. The situation along the Croatian coast will deteriorate, rapidly turning us into the Red Sea, where the sea temperature remains around 30°C year-round, warned Croatian meteorologist Dusko Kraljev, commenting on yet another heatwave this season. On Thursday morning, the water temperature in Pula in northern Croatia was 29°C, and in Rovinj - 28°C. Experts warn that the increase in Adriatic water temperatures will negatively impact marine flora and fauna in the long term.
