According to a statement published Thursday morning by the Holy See Press Office, the pope's doctors assessed that a chest X-ray of the pope showed improvement.

However, the health situation of Pope Francis remains complex, so he needs more time in hospital.

Pope Francis is spending the 12th anniversary of his election, which falls on Thursday, in hospital. Prayers for the health of the 88-year-old pope, who is suffering from bilateral pneumonia, will be held at the Vatican, churches in Rome, and in many places around the world. It is still unknown how long he will have to remain in the Gemelli Polyclinic.

On Wednesday morning and afternoon, the pope followed the ongoing Roman Curia retreat in the Vatican via a connection to the Paul VI Hall, then received communion and devoted himself to prayer. He also underwent motor and respiratory physiotherapy.

"Remembering those words once again, today, we look with affection and hope at the windows of the tenth floor of Gemelli Hospital. We thank Pope Francis for this magisterium of fragility, for that still feeble voice of his that has joined the Rosary in St Peter’s Square in recent days—a fragile voice that continues to implore peace and not war, dialogue and not oppression, compassion and not indifference," it was noted on the Vatican News website.
