Pope Leo XIV: Argument with VP Vance
The new pope is Cardinal Robert Prevost from the USA, who has adopted the name Leo XIV. Until recently, he occasionally commented on current affairs via social media.
The announcement of the new pope's election was made on Thursday from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica by Cardinal Protodeacon Dominique Mamberti.
The new pope, Leo XIV, is a 69-year-old American Augustinian from Chicago. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost is an influential prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and served in Peru for many years.
Cardinal Robert Prevost has an account on the platform X, where he sometimes voiced his opinions on topics important to him.
In February, he quoted the title of an article critical of U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance in his post. The piece published by the National Catholic Reporter was titled "JD Vance is wrong: Jesus doesn't ask us to rank our love for others".
A journalist from NCR recalled Vance's remarks about love for others: "The Internet has been buzzing since Vice President JD Vance said during a Fox News interview on Jan. 29, 'There is a Christian concept that you love your family and then you love your neighbour, and then you love your community, and then you love your fellow citizens, and then after that, prioritise the rest of the world. A lot of the far left has completely inverted that.'"
The author of the article quoted the words of Jesus, who was asked: 'Who is my neighbour?'. The journalist mentions that at that time "he responded with a story: a man is beaten and left for dead. The religious leaders pass by, their robes untouched by the mess of it all. The Samaritan — a stranger, a foreigner, an enemy — stops. He is the one who shows love".
