Russia eyes the Latin American market with the Su‑577 debut in Rio
Russia is preparing to participate in the LAAD 2025 defence exhibition in Rio de Janeiro, where it will showcase its advanced weapons systems, including the Su-57 fighter jet. This is the first time this aircraft will be displayed in South America. Rosoboronexport, the Russian arms exporter, has confirmed its presence at the event, starting on 1st April at Greenwich Mean Time.
Russia is attempting to increase its modern combat aircraft exports, which have not yet garnered much interest in foreign markets. Part of these efforts includes participating in international air shows. Previously, the Su-57 made its debut at shows in China and India, where Russia made an offer to sell these aircraft, including technology transfers and joint production. Soon, it will appear at the LAAD 2025 defence exhibition in Rio de Janeiro.
Russian strategy in Latin America
Russia strives to increase its presence in Latin America, where its arms exports have declined recently. Participation in the exhibition in Brazil aims to reverse this trend. Russia plans to collaborate with countries in the region on the design and production of precision weapon systems and drones, reports The EurAsian Times.
The service also notes that despite production issues and international sanctions, Russia claims to have overcome technological and logistical challenges, which could help increase exports. Rosoboronexport signed over €4.4 billion contracts with 15 countries in 2025, indicating growing interest in Russian weaponry.
Russian fifth-generation fighter jet
The Su-57 is a Russian fifth-generation fighter jet equipped with stealth technology and advanced combat systems designed to provide an advantage on the battlefield. Its active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar allows it to detect and track targets at long distances, which is crucial in modern armed conflicts. Additionally, the Su-57 possesses a passive infrared search and track (IRST) system that acts like an undetectable radar, enhancing its ability to detect enemy units without revealing its position.
The Su-57 can carry a wide range of weaponry. Its internal bays can hold air-to-air missiles such as the K-77M and R-74M2, as well as air-to-ground missiles, including precision-guided bombs like the KAB-250 and KAB-500. Additionally, the Su-57 can be equipped with cruise missiles like the Kh-38M and Kh-58UShK, allowing it to strike ground targets effectively from long distances.
