Russian troops at the front in Ukraine have gained new support in the form of M1989 Koksan artillery, supplied by North Korea. According to experts from Defence Express, in recent months, Russia has received at least four shipments of this modern weapon. Currently, there may be around 200 units of these systems at the front.

Russians showcased the Koksan howitzer

The M1989 Koksan is a self-propelled howitzer with a 170 mm calibre, boasting a range of 40 to 50 kilometres, which can extend to over 60 kilometres using rocket-assisted projectiles. Thanks to its tracked chassis, these systems are highly mobile, a crucial factor in challenging front-line conditions.

The latest shipment of M1989 Koksan was observed in the northern part of Crimea towards the end of March. Ukrainian diversionary groups reported the movement of approximately eight of these howitzers.

The M1989 Koksan systems are compared to the Russian 2S7 Pion, which have also reappeared at the front. According to the Oryx report, the Kremlin lost 32 2S7 Pion systems, although unofficially, this number is said to be over 60. Before the war, Russia had about 100 units of this weapon, though they were in various states of repair.

North Korea's support for Russia is critical in the context of further military actions. Without deliveries of modern artillery, the Russian army could encounter significant difficulties in maintaining its position at the front. The M1989 Koksan, with its range and mobility, constitutes a significant reinforcement for Russian armed forces.
