Russian Il‑20 surveillance intensifies over Belarus skies
As reported by the Defence Blog portal, citing the findings of the eRadar company, the Russians conducted reconnaissance with the Ilyushin Il-20 aircraft over Belarusian territory on Tuesday, 27th May. The aircraft monitored Ukrainian air defence resources in the western part of the country, it states.
According to eRadar, the appearance of the aforementioned Russian aircraft over Belarus indicates that the Russians are increasingly focusing on electronic surveillance to support military operations in Ukraine.
Il-20 Russians over Belarus
Belarus, as an ally of Russia, provides its airspace, allowing operations without exposing Russian aircraft to hostile fire. The Il-20 is used by Russia to monitor key logistical routes, including those through which NATO countries supply weapons.
With advanced reconnaissance systems, the Il-20 analyses transport routes, the functioning of anti-aircraft defence systems, and the command activities of the Ukrainian army. This enables Russia to form a comprehensive operational picture of the region.
Russian intelligence exploits this data to observe NATO's response to increased regional activity. Operations of aircraft from bases in Poland, Lithuania, and Romania, as well as the activation of radar systems, are scrutinised.
Despite being technologically inferior to modern Western platforms, the Il-20 remains a crucial tool in the Russian intelligence apparatus. Its capabilities extend beyond mere eavesdropping to include terrain imaging and observation of ground targets.
The gathered data is swiftly analysed and transmitted to Russian command centres, where it can be employed for planning military actions or disseminating misinformation.

The Il-20 aircraft is a specialised machine designed for reconnaissance missions. It has recently been frequently observed in international airspace over the Baltic Sea, where it was intercepted by NATO aircraft. The design of the Il-20 is based on the passenger model Il-18D. Its primary role is conducting electronic reconnaissance, which includes detecting and intercepting communication signals and gathering imaging data. This capability enables the precise location of ground systems belonging to potential adversaries.
As a reconnaissance aircraft, the Il-20 is equipped with advanced technologies that allow it to operate efficiently over long distances. These capabilities permit the aircraft to conduct reconnaissance from a safe distance while supporting allied military forces.
The aircraft's equipment facilitates the execution of various operations in international airspace without infringing on other countries' borders. This is a key element of Russia's reconnaissance strategy, enabling the collection of critical strategic data without direct engagement in conflict zones.
