Russia's bold proposal faces US opposition amid peace talks

Russia is pushing for a "temporary administration" to be appointed by the UN and representatives from Russia, the USA, and other interested countries to take control in Kyiv. The United States is unlikely to agree to such terms. U.S. State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce stated, "Governance in Ukraine is determined by its constitution and the Ukrainian people."

Donald Trump announced that peace talks are set to commence soon, aimed at ending the war between Ukraine and Russia. However, as of now, the parties cannot even agree on a complete ceasefire.

The Kremlin continues to impose conditions that are unacceptable to the Ukrainian authorities and the United States. Russia wants the peace talks to be orchestrated by a "temporary administration." Officials loyal to Vladimir Putin have suggested that members of such a "government" would be appointed by the UN and other interested parties.

Nonetheless, members of Donald Trump's administration have criticised the proposal to remove Volodymyr Zelensky from power. Some US politicians, who are sceptical of the Ukrainian leader, have openly acknowledged that changing power in Ukraine is unattainable.

There was an idea from Russia about a temporary administration that was not appreciated by the president. Ukraine is... a constitutional democracy. Governance in Ukraine is determined by its constitution and the Ukrainian people. We are committed to the diplomacy necessary to achieve a full ceasefire and to bring the parties to the negotiating table for a final and lasting settlement - said U.S. State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce during a press conference.

Bruce also confirmed rumours that Russia is indeed attempting to change the government in Ukraine without conducting general elections. However, Volodymyr Zelensky has agreed to hold elections, contingent upon the ending of the war.
