The date of the Day of Arafat was officially confirmed on Wednesday, 28th May of this year after the crescent moon was observed, marking the beginning of the month of Dhul-Hijjah. It is always the 9th day of this month and the second day of the Hajj, the pilgrimage to the Al-Kaaba in Mecca.

Hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam, is not only a physical journey but above all a spiritual experience. It takes place once a year at a strictly defined time, and millions of Muslims gather in the city of Mecca. The event is considered the largest annual gathering of people on Earth. During the five-day pilgrimage, participants cover over 60 kilometres, visiting places where they perform specific rituals.

Day of Arafat

On Thursday, June 5th, the pilgrimaging Muslims will gather on the Plain of Arafat to participate in prayers and spiritual reflection. For believers who do not participate in the Hajj, fasting is recommended. According to Muslim tradition, this is the best day of the year.

Concerns about the heat

Although the entire pilgrimage and the Day of Arafat are spiritually crucial times for Muslims, they are also associated with the danger of physical exhaustion. It's not only about the number of kilometres covered but also the accompanying extreme heat. The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities of Saudi Arabia warns believers and recommends taking precautions, including using sun-protective umbrellas. Additionally, it advises older people, especially, to stay in tents during the midday hours.

This year's Hajj takes place from June 4th to 9th, and according to forecasts, temperatures are expected to reach 50°C. According to the Islamic lunar calendar, for the next 16 years, the pilgrimages will gradually shift to cooler spring and then winter months.

In preparation for this year's pilgrimage, Saudi Arabia has, among other things, increased the number of hospital beds by 60% and covered roads in critical areas with a special substance. This lowers the surface temperature by about 30°C.

Let us remember that the authorities of Saudi Arabia have decided to double the financial penalties for those participating in the pilgrimage to Mecca without the required permits. This decision aims to reduce the number of unauthorised pilgrims and minimise the health risk for believers.
