Seagull steals spotlight as papal conclave awaits decision

The eyes of the world are on the roof of the Sistine Chapel. Thus far, the faithful have only seen black smoke and... a white seagull that perched on the chapel's roof and unexpectedly became a favourite among internet users. According to some, the "conclave seagull" has returned, the same one that accompanied the election of Pope Francis in 2013.

The conclave is underway in the Vatican. We’ve already had three votes, but the white smoke signalling the election of a new pope has yet to appear. However, a white seagull appeared and perched on the roof of the Sistine Chapel, immediately capturing the attention of the faithful. Could it be watching over the cardinals to ensure they make a good choice?

On 7th May, when the election of Francis's successor began, the Vatican became the centre of attention. Cameras from around the world were focused on the chimney of the Sistine Chapel. And that's where the unexpected "actress" appeared, stealing the show. The bird spent several hours on the roof. At one point, it even sat on the chimney. Occasionally, a "companion" joined the seagull, as seen in photos and recordings.

Social media has been flooded with dozens of humorous posts about the seagull. It is being called the "queen," "diva," "conclave seagull," and "paid actress."

"The seagull that lingered there for hours is an actress paid to maintain suspense," "Habemus seagull," "The world is tensely waiting for the smoke from the chimney watched by the seagull," internet users joke.

"Habemus seagull"

This is not the first time a seagull has become an informal symbol of the papal election. A similar event occurred in 2013 when Pope Francis was elected. Some even speculate that the same bird has returned to the chapel's roof.

Over a decade ago, the seagull managed to fly away before the white smoke rose from the chimney. Will it be the same this time?

For now, the seagull has become one of the most observed birds in the world. Some believe it is merely a coincidence, while others are convinced that nothing happens by chance and see a sign from God in this Roman-celebrity seagull.
