The civil war in Sudan, ongoing for two years, has resulted in as many as 13 million people being displaced. According to the United Nations, this includes 8.6 million internally displaced persons and 3.8 million refugees.

Abdourahouf Gnon-Konde, director of the African Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), emphasised that the war, which began on 15 April 2023, has claimed tens of thousands of lives. The conflict erupted between Sudan's military and the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF), leading to famine and the division of the country into territories controlled by different groups.

In western Sudan, in the Darfur region, the RSF launched a new offensive aimed at Al-Fashir. It is the last major city remaining under the control of the Sudanese army. The attack was a response to the earlier takeover of Khartoum by the army. The fighting continued from Thursday to Sunday, and according to UN data cited by the Polish Press Agency, over 400 people were killed.

Escape from the Zamzam camp

On Sunday, the RSF captured the Zamzam refugee camp, located about 15 kilometres from Al-Fashir. Thousands of people, despite the ongoing fighting, fled to Al-Fashir. The International Organisation for Migration reported that the attack on Zamzam caused the displacement of 70,000 families.

On Tuesday, a meeting of representatives from about 20 countries will be held in London to find a solution to the crisis in Sudan.
